In 200-500 words write a journal about what you learned in class and what you wish you had learned that you did not you should also discuss if you met your goals and had questions answered from the beginning of the class).
Social Media Strategies has been a really informative class for me. From creating my own blog to a professional twitter where I don't just tweet memes and the embarrassing things that have happened to me. This class has taught me to be more in touch with social media, not avoid it - it's part of the workplace now, and I will be needing to use it with my degree and the jobs I will hopefully be getting.
There is a lot more to social media than I thought. A major goal of mine at the beginning of class was to find people within the sporting industry who have jobs centered around the communication in the field as well as looking at positions that specifically manage the social media accounts of the teams. With my new professional twitter I was able to follow a lot of them actually, and even had one favorite my tweet. Along with that I found a great internship with NASCAR, I've submitted my resume that we fixed in class and recently received an email saying they had weeded out a few of the candidates and I'm still in the running.
I've followed my favorite teams for a while now, but when I made a media kit for the Denver Broncos, the social media calendar threw me for a loop. I wanted learn how to make good tweets that focus on the team and fans. Which I think following certain accounts with my new twitter has really helped.
Another goal is learning how to reach both side of the spectrum, from the older generation who usually use just email and Facebook to the meme generation that have all the social media accounts imaginable. A HUGE goal of mine is getting better with planning. As a senior I've perfected procrastinating and getting things done the literal last minute. But, I want to learn how to plan and have tweets and such already formulated and ready to go - to where you just give it a set time and date to be publish. That's a wild concept to me, having stuff planned out for the week before the week has even started. Thanks to Hootsuite I can do that now, especially once football starts back - I'm working on my NASCAR tweets right now.
This has been one of the most fun classes I've taken at Appalachian State, I'm sad it was a summer class and we only had five weeks together. I'm excited to use what I've learned in the internship (if I get it, fingers crossed) and be able to put other talents I've learned in this class on a resume - much like the HTML training.
