Being a Girl Gamer

Updated: Jun 24, 2018

Growing up the only video games I was able to get a hold of were those at my cousins' house. My brother and I were more for sports, I played tee ball and softball while he played football and baseball. I never actively sought out gaming until I was in middle school. From there it started my love for video games.

I started playing on my cousin's GameCube where I would play Mario Kart and Animal Crossing, then my other cousin had a Playstation where we could play Mario Party together. I got a Gameboy and later a DS. I was in love with Pokemon and Animal Crossing. The first video game device I bought on my own was a PSP. My two favorite games were Kingdom Hearts and Grand Thief Auto. Finally, I got a Playstation3 in high school and I began to really appreciate gaming. I never had any trouble being a girl gamer though, why should I? My cousins were all girls that let me play with their games... (did you think they were boys?)

There is a type of stereotype going around about female gamers, but also how we are treated. I don't know if I can just say I'm lucky or that the treatment is untrue, but everyone I play with have been beyond amazing.

I've been lucky in the gaming groups I've fallen into. Particularly through Twitch. I began watching a few streams of people in the same game, soon I found myself in their Discords. (Discord is a popular social media among gamers) From there I have made many friends, we've met at TwitchCon and the next one is in July which is exciting.

Maybe I did get lucky, but all the guys in our groups do not fall into the types that look down on females in the video game world. We are sort of a dysfunctional family, but its nice to see how we're more than just gaming friends. It's a lot of fun on Saturday night game nights and watching a few of them stream to a couple hundred people sometimes near 1,000. I have definitely been lucky with finding my gaming squad.
